About Zantac (Ranitidine)
Ranitidine is an H2-blocker antacid and antihistamine drug used to treat stomach, throat, and skin conditions such as heartburn, acid reflux, stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), eczema, and urticaria (hives). Zantac, the most well-known ranitidine drug, gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1983. By 1988, it was generating $1 billion in annual sales, making it among the first medications to do so. Ranitidine was sold in varying dosages, under many brand names, including:
- Zantac 75 Tablets
- Zantac 150 Tablets
- Zantac 150 Maximum Strength
- Zantac 150 Maximum Strength Cool Mint

504-500-1111Zantac Cancer Risks
In September 2019, the FDA alerted consumers that dangerously high levels of the carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were found in batches of Zantac and generic ranitidine tested by various pharmacies and laboratories. Just how high is “dangerously high?” While acceptable daily exposure to NDMA tops out at just 96 nanograms, one pharmacy found NDMA levels exceeding 3,000,000 nanograms in the products it tested. Further testing by the FDA revealed something even more worrisome: The NDMA content in ranitidine can increase over time and when stored at higher than room temperatures.
Though several manufacturers (and retailers) voluntarily pulled ranitidine drugs from shelves during the investigative process, the FDA officially requested an immediate withdraw of all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine products from the market in April 2020.
NDMA has been linked to cancers in both humans and animals since the 1970s. Serious health problems associated with NDMA exposure include:
- Stomach cancer
- Liver cancer
- Bladder cancer (sometimes requiring bladder removal)
- Esophageal, nasal, or throat cancers
- Pancreatic cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH)
- Crohn’s disease
- And other medical conditions
Zantac Cancer Lawsuits
Drug manufacturers have a legal obligation to ensure the safety of their products, and warn consumers of any serious risks and side effects—or face liability for injuries or losses that occur. Lawsuits filed by people who were diagnosed with cancer after regularly taking Zantac (or other medications with the same active ingredient) claim that drugmakers have been aware of the links between ranitidine, NDMA formation, and cancer risks for decades, but failed to warn the public.
As of June 2021, more than 1,000 lawsuits have been filed against ranitidine manufacturers and retailers. If you used Zantac, were diagnosed with cancer, and can show a link between the two events based on the dosage and how long you took it, our trial-savvy New Orleans Zantac attorneys may be able to help you recover compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages and earning potential
- Pain and suffering
- Reduced quality of life
- Loss of enjoyment of life
- And other losses

504-500-1111Zantac Class Action Lawyers in New Orleans FAQs
When you or a loved one has been affected by Zantac, it’s crucial to take immediate action by working with New Orleans Zantac class action lawyers. Whether you’re seeking compensation for your injuries or want to understand the class action process better, our Scott Vicknair, LLC, team can help. Let’s explore some FAQs regarding Zantac and class action lawsuits:
What is Zantac?
Zantac (ranitidine) can treat conditions like heartburn and acid reflex, making it quite popular. It belongs to a class of drugs called histamine-2 blockers and was available both over-the-counter (OTC) and through prescription.
What are the health risks associated with Zantac?
Recent studies have suggested that Zantac may contain a potential carcinogen called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen, and long-term exposure to high levels of NDMA may increase the risk of developing cancer, including stomach, bladder, kidney, and other related cancers.
What is a class action lawsuit?
A class action lawsuit is a legal action brought by a group of individuals (the “class”) who have suffered similar harm or injuries caused by the same product or entity. Essentially, people in similar situations with similar claims can band together for the legal process.
How does a class action lawsuit work?
In a class action lawsuit, one or more individuals act as representatives of the class, known as class representatives. These representatives hire an attorney, known as a class action lawyer, who files the lawsuit on behalf of the entire class. When a case is successful, compensation will be distributed throughout the different plaintiffs.
Why should I join a Zantac class action lawsuit?
By joining a Zantac class action lawsuit, you become part of a larger group seeking justice and compensation for the harm caused by the medication. It allows you to share the legal costs, leverage the collective strength of the class, and increase the chances of a successful outcome.
How do I find a Zantac class action lawyer in Louisiana?
To find reliable New Orleans Zantac class action lawyers, implement the following steps:
- Research reputable law firms specializing in class action lawsuits.
- Check their experience, track record, and expertise in handling pharmaceutical-related cases.
- Schedule consultations to discuss your case and evaluate their approach to handling class action lawsuits.
What should I look for in a Zantac class action lawyer?
Before choosing a Zantac class action lawyer, consider the following:
- Experience: Look for attorneys with a proven track record in handling class action lawsuits and pharmaceutical cases.
- Resources: Ensure the law firm has the necessary resources to take on large corporations and build a strong case.
- Communication: Choose a lawyer who is responsive, communicates effectively, and keeps you informed about the progress of your case.
- Contingency Fee: Many class action lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win the case. Clarify the fee structure before proceeding.
Can I file an individual lawsuit instead of joining a class action?
You have the legal right to file an individual lawsuit against the manufacturers or other responsible parties instead of pursuing a class action lawsuit. However, it’s essential to consider the potential advantages and disadvantages of pursuing an individual lawsuit compared to joining a class action. Consulting with an experienced class action lawyer can help you make an informed decision.
What compensation can I expect from a Zantac class action lawsuit?
The amount of compensation you may receive from a Zantac class action lawsuit depends on several factors, including the severity of your injuries, the number of class members, and the outcome of the case. Compensation in class action lawsuits can vary widely and may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and punitive damages.
How long does a Zantac class action lawsuit take to resolve?
The duration of a Zantac class action lawsuit can vary depending on various factors, such as the complexity of the case, the number of class members involved, and the court’s schedule. While some Zantac class action lawsuits can be resolved in a few months others may take years. It’s important to be patient and allow the legal process to unfold.
Is there a deadline for joining a Zantac class action lawsuit?
Yes, there is typically a deadline, known as the statute of limitations, within which you must join a class action lawsuit. The statute of limitations varies from state to state and can also depend on other factors. By working with New Orleans Zantac class action lawyers you can ensure you join a lawsuit on time.
